Introduction:

At the Bernalillo County Home Visitation Work Group (BCHVWG) Coalition, we are deeply committed to addressing the critical issue of overcoming language barriers. We firmly believe that language should never be a hindrance to accessing safe housing, quality healthcare, education, and essential resources. It is our unwavering mission to bridge these gaps and barriers to ensure equitable support for all families. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the importance of addressing language barriers and how our coalition is dedicated to making a positive change.

The Language Diversity in Our Community

Our vibrant community in Bernalillo County paints a rich tapestry of languages and cultures. The languages spoken at home encompass a wide range, including English, Spanish, French, Dari, Swahili, German, Persian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tagalog, Arabic, and Native Languages of North America. This diversity is a testament to the multicultural fabric of our county.

Challenges We Aim to Overcome

Through more than 13 family dialogues sessions, with parents and community members, in different demographics of Bernalillo County, we have identified several challenges arising from language barriers. These challenges encompass critical areas such as:

Transportation

Although, Albuquerque is s metro city, in so many areas it is still rural.  Finding transportation is difficult, as sometimes you must walk miles and miles to get to a bus stop. Transportation to a child care is also very difficult.

Education

Parents expressed concerns about the need for tutors who can assist their children with schoolwork, helping bridge the language gap in subjects like math, science, and reading. Access to extracurricular activities and preparation for kindergarten is also crucial.

Access to Resources

Navigating systems can be daunting when interpretation services are limited. Parents need assistance with filing school documents, accessing medical services, securing transportation, and finding job opportunities.

Childcare

Quality childcare is essential, but co-payments and transportation hurdles can hinder parents’ ability to work or attend English classes to improve their language skills.

Our Commitment to Support

The BCHVWG Coalition recognizes the urgency of these language-related challenges and is actively working to provide solutions and support effectively. Our commitment includes:

Bilingual Home Visitors

We aim to support more home visitors who speak the native language of the family, ensuring clear communication and strong connections to community resources and connecting families to these home visiting programs.

Resource Access

We strive to enhance access to resources, making it easier for families to navigate systems and access the services they need.

Support for Working Parents

We are dedicated to helping parents overcome barriers to employment and education by connecting parents to the New Mexico Child Care Finder Program to assist  with childcare co-payments and transportation challenges.
